1. Set aside a time to clean and organize. Just 10 minutes a day = 300 minutes a month... which can be enough to get a huge job done.
2. Focus on 1 small area at a time. Don't try to tackle an entire section... or even an entire room... at once. Keep it simple and small and you'll have a better chance at success.
3. Bring 3 boxes or trash bags with you. 1 will be the "keep" box/bag. 1 will be the "trash" box/bag. 1 will be the "give away/donate" box/bag.
4. Touch things only once. Once you pick something up, it MUST be sorted into one of the 3 boxes or bags. Don't set things aside to be "dealt with" later.
5. Be merciless. Don't be afraid to trash things, especially old, unused clothing, shoes, papers, etc. If it's of no use or important to you or anyone else, let it go!
6. Donate anything that is in decent shape and/or could have some value to someone else. Remember that local thrift shops, the Salvation Army, and Craigslist are great for donating things quickly.
7. Do a quick cleaning. Once an area is cleared of its "stuff" do a quick cleaning of the area. Dust, vacuum, and/or mop. This will give you a tremendous feeling of accomplishment and renewed vigor.
8. Put stuff away. Put the hopefully few things you decided to keep away in a cabinet, shelf, or other storage area. Throw away trash. Take your "donation" stuff to the local thrift shop or have someone pick it up (e.g. the Salvation Army or Craigslist).
9. Enjoy your de-clutter space! Take a moment to look at your newly de-cluttered living space and allow the feelings of "relief" wash over you. You deserve it!
